Vegan butcher shop opens in Dresden
Saxony's first fully vegan butcher shop opened on Saturday, 7.1.2023, in Dresden.
«Our primary goal is for fewer people to eat meat and instead consume vegan products,» says Nils Steiger (27). Steiger is one of the four founders of the shop «Die Vegane Fleischerei» in Dresden's trendy Neustadt district.
The inspiration for his business idea was originally a «vegan butcher shop» in London. «I really wanted to be able to buy such products in Dresden too. But that wasn't possible. So we had to do it ourselves,» says Steiger.
Since he couldn't pursue his dream alone due to lack of experience, he teamed up with vegan chef Daniel Quis, restaurateur Andreas Henning, and Stefan Meyer-Götz.
«Die Vegane Fleischerei» states that it produces 70 percent of the products it sells in-house. The remaining 30 percent, including vegan cheese, are sourced externally. Products on offer include sauerbraten, cold cuts, roulades, goulash, solyanka, and various types of cheese, all on a purely plant-based basis.
Delicious products without dead animals
Animals are our friends, and you don't eat your friends.
The abilities of animals — but above all those referred to by humans as so-called «farm animals» — are often underestimated. We therefore wish to respect animals as the sentient beings they are, and not as commodities to be traded over a shop counter.
Vegan diet for the climate
97% of all farm animals in Germany live in factory farming conditions. Animal products cause more greenhouse gas emissions than plant-based foods. Even the most sustainably produced meat is generally worse for the environment than the most environmentally damaging plant-based foods. A vegan diet saves over 50% in CO2 emissions compared to a mixed diet.
Agriculture emits 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The majority of these emissions come from the production of animal-based foods such as meat, fish, and dairy.
