USA: Dog kills hobby hunter

In Kansas, a dog stepped on a rifle and shot its 30-year-old owner during a hunting trip. A tragic accident.

Dog stepped on rifle

A hobby hunter was killed over the weekend during a hunting trip in Kansas when a dog stepped on a rifle and fired it, according to the Sumner County Sheriff's Office.

Officers were dispatched on Saturday, 21 January 2023. Joseph Austin Smith, 30, of Wichita had been shot in the back while sitting in the passenger seat. Smith died as a result of the gunshot wound.

Not an isolated incident

In recent years there have been several other notable incidents involving dogs and firearms. Over Thanksgiving weekend 2022, a 32-year-old Turkish hobby hunter was shot when a dog discharged a loaded shotgun.

Since the beginning of the new year, there have been 101 unintentional shootings in the United States. In 2022, more than 1’600 unintentional shootings were reported. More on the topic Crime and hunting.
