Alpine ibex populations in Graubünden are thriving. To prevent regional “overpopulation,” a regulation hunt on ibex does will be introduced in 2023 across various colonies. 27 recreational hunters are each permitted to shoot two non-nursing ibex does, resulting in an additional cull of 54 does.
Population control through recreational hunting questionable
Whether such regulation hunts achieve the desired effect is scientifically contested. Recreational hunting fails as a population control measure.
