The preserved animals were found in three tombs, announced Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anany. The chambers had served as a necropolis for cats more than 3’000 years old.
Cats were considered sacred in ancient Egypt
Three sarcophagi from the New Kingdom period, dating from 1’550 to 1’070 BC, contained dozens of embalmed cats, as well as 100 gilded wooden cats and a bronze statue of the cat goddess Bastet, according to the minister. Cats held a special status in ancient Egypt. They were considered sacred and were often embalmed as religious offerings.
As far back as 4’000 years ago, wealthy Egyptians kept cats as pets. Animals in general played a major role in the worship of the gods. Researchers estimate that tens of millions of animals were mummified.
Further finds: cobras and crocodiles
According to the antiquities authority, researchers also discovered several wooden sarcophagi containing embalmed cobras and crocodiles. The excavations began in April.
