Wolf spotted in the Zurich Oberland
A wildlife camera photographs a wolf near Bäretswil in the Zurich Oberland. The sighting confirms the continued spread of the wolf in Switzerland.
On Friday, 12 March 2021, at 6:04 p.m., an automatic wildlife camera belonging to the local hunting society photographed a wolf in a forest clearing in the Bäretswil area.
No further wolf sightings or confirmed detections occurred in the canton of Zurich in the period before or after the image was taken. Whether the animal is still in the area is not known. Wolves can cover very large distances in a short period of time. It is therefore possible that the animal is no longer in the canton of Zurich.
The Fisheries and Hunting Authority is also notifying livestock owners in the canton via the Wolf SMS information service about the possible presence of the wolf, so that they can take the necessary precautions to protect their animals.
No danger to the public
The wolf poses no danger to the public. The wolf is a shy animal that avoids humans. However, if you encounter a wolf, you should keep your distance and withdraw. Dogs should be kept on a lead.
At the end of November 2020, an animal killed five sheep near Niederweningen at the foot of the Lägern in the canton of Zurich. The tracks in a pasture at the time strongly suggested a wolf. There have been several confirmed wolf sightings in the canton of Zurich in recent years.
