The Water Castle Runs Dry
Switzerland has enshrined food security in its constitution since 2017. Yet arable land is limited and climate change is increasing production uncertainties.
Food Security Under Threat
Since 2017, food security has been anchored in the constitution. The prevailing drought shows how quickly production uncertainties can develop as a result of the climate crisis. Agricultural policy has failed to prepare the food and farming sector for the climate crisis.
In Valais and Ticino, water supplies and agricultural production are already under threat in March. Massimiliano Zappa, chief hydrologist at WSL, is urging authorities to introduce restrictions at an early stage.
Flexitarian for the Future
Already today, 63% of the Swiss population consciously eat fewer animal products. A sustainable food production system that safeguards biodiversity and soil fertility is urgently needed. More on climate change and environment and nature conservation.
