Roe deer strangles itself in Flexinet fence in the Jura

Animals that become entangled in fences suffer a torturous death. The struggle for survival is often long and futile. Particularly dangerous are neglected, unmaintained fences and pasture nets that are not checked daily.

Dead roe buck found in Flexinet fence

On 27 October 2023, during a walk in Epiquerez in the canton of Jura, a dead roe buck was found, once again strangled in a Flexinet fence.

He was presumably startled a short time earlier on Wednesday during a hunting activity by hobby hunters and fled in a panic. In his flight, he became entangled in the net that had been set up at the edge of the forest to protect maize crops.

His death struggle was punctuated by electric shocks that this net continues to emit to this day. The canton's wildlife warden was alerted and collected the unfortunate animal.

Farmer shows no compassion

The walker approached the responsible farmer, or rather his wife. The farmer's wife dismissed the walker coldly and curtly, showing no compassion for the dead animal.

Anyone who erects fences is responsible for their function and condition. Conscientious farmers and animal keepers take care when constructing and maintaining fences, both with regard to their livestock and to wildlife. As a comprehensive guide, the STS has revised and updated its information sheet «Safe fences for farm and wild animals».

Accusation of deliberate killing

“How is it possible to go through life so cold-bloodedly, selfishly, and arrogantly, concerned only with one’s own profit? I accuse these farmers as well as the hobby hunters of deliberate killing,” the walker stated.

“I can only hope that one day awareness will awaken in humanity, so that people understand that all living beings on this planet deserve equal respect. As long as humanity destroys the lives and habitats of their animal kin, there will be no peace in this world.”
