Nature on Prescription: Less Anxiety and Blood Pressure
Prescriptions encouraging people to spend more time in nature lower blood pressure and improve symptoms of anxiety and depression. This is shown by a new analysis.
Green and blue prescriptions
Prescriptions that encourage people to spend more time in nature are, according to a study in Lancet Planetary Health, associated with a reduction in blood pressure and an improvement in symptoms of anxiety and depression.
The most frequently recommended activities were walks in nature (46%), gardening (29%), and mindfulness exercises (29%). The most common locations: forests and nature reserves (35%) and parks (28%).
Good for mind and body
“It is good for mental health, good for physical health, and good for staying active,” says Prof. Thomas Astell-Burt. In urban areas, a proportion of 30% green spaces reduces the likelihood of developing diabetes and mental health problems. More on the topic: Studies and Biodiversity.
