Hunting accidents and crimes committed by recreational hunters

The “Initiative for the Abolition of Hunting” has been documenting hunting accidents and crimes involving hunters' weapons based on press reports for over 20 years. The alarming reports of recent weeks make it more than clear: recreational hunting must come to an end!

No statistics on human victims

Neither the hunting association nor state authorities keep statistics on deaths and injuries caused by recreational hunting and recreational hunters' weapons. Fatal relationship dramas involving hunting weapons are not classified as hunting accidents but as crimes.

Documentation since 2002

The only organisation that has kept statistics on hunting accidents and crimes involving recreational hunters' weapons since 2002 is the Initiative for the Abolition of Hunting. The compilation is presumably only the tip of the iceberg.

Hunting accidents 2023

On 15 May 2023, a 73-year-old recreational hunter in Oldenburg shot his 58-year-old wife and then took his own life. On 4 May 2023, a 42-year-old recreational hunter in Frankfurt (Oder) was sentenced to life imprisonment for treacherous murder. The complete documentation for 2023 shows the scale of the problem. More on the subject of recreational hunting: In the dossier Poaching and hunting crime in Switzerland we document cases, legal questions and recurring patterns. The scientific evidence is presented in the overview Studies on the Effects of Recreational Hunting.

The position of IG Wild beim Wild: IG Wild beim Wild rejects recreational hunting. Our model is the canton of Geneva, which has managed without recreational hunting since 1974: without hunting seasons, without hunting dogs, without driven hunts, without high seats, without the animal cruelty and crime that go hand in hand with hunting season elsewhere. What has worked there for over fifty years disproves every position paper by JagdSchweiz. An association that bases its policy on claims it refutes in its own documents is not a professional organisation, but a factory for misinformation.
