«Feminist» and «Nigerian» did not die in vain
At the bullfight in Gijón, bulls named «Feminist» and «Nigerian» were killed. The mayor sees this as a violation of human rights.
Gijón is a large coastal city in northern Spain.
End of corridas in Gijón
Mayor Ana González Rodríguez has now surprisingly announced that the city council will not renew the concession for the El Bibio bullring. This decision means that no more bullfights will take place.
Because two bulls named «Feminist» and «Nigerian» were killed at a bullfight in Gijón, the mayor sees «several boundaries crossed». The event had been used for «ideological» purposes and had violated human rights.
«Such things must not be permitted», González Rodríguez emphasises.
Bullfighter calls it a «shameful act»
The conservative People's Party (PP) announced legal action. The ban represented «ideological paternalism» and «a restriction of freedom». The famous bullfighter El Juli criticised the measure as «absurd» and «a disgrace».Politicians from the left-wing spectrum, on the other hand, praised the initiative of the 58-year-old.
The extent to which bullfighting can be banned or restricted in Spain is contested. After dozens of municipalities and regions across the country had passed bans, the Constitutional Court in Madrid ruled in 2016 that only the state could decide on the abolition of such events — because bullfighting had been declared a national cultural heritage in 2013.
More on the subject of recreational hunting: In our dossiers on the criticism of recreational hunting gather fact-checks, analyses and background reports. The scientific evidence is presented in the overview Studies on the Effects of Recreational Hunting.
The position of IG Wild beim Wild: IG Wild beim Wild rejects recreational hunting. Our model is the canton of Geneva, which has managed without recreational hunting since 1974: without hunting seasons, without hunting dogs, without driven hunts, without high seats, without the animal cruelty and crime that go hand in hand with hunting season elsewhere. What has worked there for over fifty years disproves every position paper by JagdSchweiz. An association that bases its policy on claims it refutes in its own documents is not a professional organisation, but a factory for misinformation.
