Restaurant lets guests slaughter animals
First the ethics, then the food. This is the principle followed by a restaurant in the Netherlands. There, guests who have an appetite for chicken must slaughter the animal themselves. The aim is to sharpen awareness of one's own meat consumption.
The restaurant «Upstick» in the Netherlands offers guests a unique and controversial experience – the opportunity to slaughter the chickens they wish to eat themselves.
This unconventional concept aims to raise awareness of meat consumption and its impact on the global climate.
The founders of Upstick are firmly convinced that if you eat meat, you also have a responsibility to know where it comes from and how it was slaughtered. As part of a four-course menu, visitors can therefore select and slaughter the chicken themselves. This unique approach is intended to give guests a deeper understanding of what it means to consume meat and what consequences this has for the environment and animal welfare.
The idea behind Upstick is not only to offer guests an extraordinary culinary experience, but also to create awareness of more sustainable eating habits. By involving guests directly in the slaughtering process, they are meant to feel the responsibility and consequences that come with consuming meat. The restaurant's goal is not to shock guests, but to give them an opportunity to make conscious decisions and develop a more reflective relationship with food.
Upstick has already attracted the attention of the local press and Dutch television. The discussion about the restaurant's concept ranges from praise for its unconventional approach to criticism from animal welfare organizations, which consider the concept ethically questionable. Wander Alblas, the head chef of Upstick, however, defends his philosophy and appeals to consumers to become aware,
Every year, 500 million chickens are slaughtered in the Netherlands. Alblas wants to raise awareness about this.
In our current system, the animal has become estranged from the meat.
Upstick
His guests are meant to ask themselves: Would they still eat chicken if they had to kill it themselves? That is precisely why visitors to «Upstick» are present at the slaughter before their meal is served.
Starter of insects and grains
If they choose to eat meat, they are of course supported and guided by the chefs and experts. After all, it must be ensured that the slaughter also takes place respectfully, ethically, and in accordance with Dutch slaughter regulations.
Afterwards, visitors can prepare and enjoy their slaughtered animals under the guidance of the chefs. The starter served upon arrival consists of insects, grains, and other ingredients that are normally fed to chickens. More on the topic Animal rights and Nutrition.
