Film: The Wolf in the Crosshairs – Protection or Culling?
The wolf has been back in Switzerland for 20 years and has established itself as an emotionally charged political issue. Right-wing politicians are pushing for extensive containment measures, as the wolf is multiplying and causing damage to livestock.
The hunting ordinance imposed in 2023 now permits the culling of two thirds of the wolf population.
Biologist and former deputy director of the Federal Office for the Environment Willy Geiger states that preventive regulation is likely to be counterproductive.
Culling promotes reproduction and immigration
New gaps in territory encourage wolves to reproduce even further and allow new wolves to migrate into the resource-rich Swiss wilderness. There are better ways to enable coexistence between wolves and alpine farming.
