Schliefenanlagen Are Torture Chambers for Foxes

PETA's motto is: Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or exploit in any other way. The organisation campaigns against speciesism — a worldview that regards humans as superior to all other living beings.

The Detmold public prosecutor's office has filed charges against the main person responsible for the Schliefenanlage Lemgo-Vossheide at the Lemgo district court.

At the end of January 2020, PETA filed criminal and regulatory complaints against all persons responsible for keeping the foxes.

It is a great success that the Detmold public prosecutor's office has now filed charges against the main responsible party, Ralf H., the operator of the local Dachshund Club.Schliefenanlagen fundamentally violate the Animal Welfare Act, because the foxes captured there are torn from nature and kept in captivity for life for the purposes of hunting dog training for the cruel earth dog trials.

Expert witnesses confirm severe suffering

Expert witnesses also confirmed that the wild animals in the video presented to the authorities were subjected to prolonged, severe suffering. Among other things, the footage shows a fox pacing back and forth in its enclosure — exhibiting what is known as stereotypic behaviour.

A veterinarian from the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection NRW assessed the video: «The fox repeatedly demonstrates over a period of at least 23 minutes that it perceives itself to be in an acute threat situation.»

Schliefenanlage Lemgo-Vossheide known for its abuses

The inadequate care of foxes kept locked in the facility for several days was already the subject of criminal proceedings before the Lemgo District Court in 2018. In several European countries, artificial earth facilities have long been banned on animal welfare grounds, while Germany still has around 100 such establishments.
