Lower Saxony: Hunting ban on cats is coming
Lower Saxony announces a hunting ban on cats and a mandatory neutering requirement. Two million homeless cats roam through Germany.
This would affect free-roaming cats, but also outdoor cats — that is, pets that are allowed to leave the home.
«With such a statewide regulation, much suffering and misery among unowned cats can be prevented,» said Agriculture Minister Miriam Staudte (Greens). However, there would be «uncomplicated exemption options.»
Preventing animal suffering
The aim is to prevent animal suffering caused by the uncontrolled reproduction of stray cats and to protect wildlife such as birds. According to Miriam Staudte, the currently permitted killing of animals in the context of hunting is also to be prohibited.
Harmonising a patchwork
According to the ministry, there are currently 169 regulations for the protection of cats across 477 towns and municipalities in Lower Saxony. This «patchwork» is to be harmonised. More on the topic of hunting law and animal rights.
