Jackals thrive in Romania
The golden jackal is spreading across Europe. Romanian farmers demonize it, but the causes lie elsewhere.
117’000 jackals across Europe
The golden jackal is spreading across Europe. In Romania alone, there are currently almost 29’000. The climate change brought them here, explains biologist Mihai Marinov. They are also found in Switzerland.
Recreational hunting counterproductive
The recreational hunting as a means of controlling jackals is considered counterproductive by Marinov: “If their numbers are artificially reduced, they simply produce more offspring.” Recreational hunting fails as population control.
Disappearance of wolves as the cause?
During communism, the wolves in the Danube Delta were nearly exterminated through recreational hunting. Jackals instinctively avoid wolves. More on the topic of wildlife and species protection.
