Europe risks falling behind on animal welfare as California's ban on fur sales has now officially come into force.
Although fur farming has been banned in many countries on ethical grounds, fur from countries such as Finland and China can still be legally imported and sold even after two decades.
California is projected to soon become the world's fourth-largest economy. Governor Gavin Newsom recently attributed this growth to “California values and entrepreneurial spirit.”
1.2 million signatures for fur ban
Movement is also emerging in Europe: An official petition by the European Citizens' Initiative, calling for an EU-wide ban on fur farming and the import of fur products, has gathered over 1.2 million signatures since its launch in May 2022.
When England became the first country in the world to ban fur farming, it set a precedent in animal welfare. Yet 20 years later, we are applying a double standard. While the ban applies here, millions of animals overseas suffer in cramped cages for frivolous fur fashion.
