A video kept secret for eight years is causing outrage and ridicule in the USA.

NRA chief fails at elephant hunt

The National Rifle Association (NRA) funded a trip to Africa for its executive director Wayne LaPierre in 2013, during which a promotional series was also filmed. The New Yorker and the non-governmental organisation Trace have now published unaired footage showing LaPierre attempting trophy hunting, trying to kill an elephant in Botswana — and failing to do so despite firing multiple shots.

LaPierre’s wife Susan: “Victory!”

Among other things, Susan LaPierre cuts off the tip of the slain animal’s tail and holds it up like a trophy, exclaiming: “Victory!”

The founder of the organisation Moms Demand Action, Shannon Watts, wrote on Twitter that the NRA chief had managed to turn both hobby hunters and gun owners against him, “because this is not only inhumane, but also because he is a terrible shot».

«No animal should suffer in this way”, said Tanya Sanerib of the Center for Biological Diversity.

Both took the feet of the slain elephant back to the USA as trophies; they are said to have been made into stools. To avoid attracting attention, the import was carried out secretly.
