Luxembourg: Dark Clouds over Hobby Hunters
A petition in Luxembourg calls for a hunting ban during school holidays, on weekends, and on public holidays. 4,500 signatures are enough to trigger a debate.
Petitions against driven hunts and weekend hunting
If a petition in Luxembourg receives 4’500 signatures within 6 weeks, it will become the subject of a public debate with members of parliament and the responsible ministers.
A new petition calls for a ban on hobby hunting during school holidays, on weekends, and on public holidays. The petitioner states: «To ensure the protection of all persons who go into the forest, all forms of hunting should be prohibited on weekends, public holidays, and during school holidays.»
Another petition by Cyril Perrichon reached the threshold on 18.1.2023 with a total of 5’044 valid signatures. In just two weeks, this petition against driven hunting surpassed 4’500 supporters — twice the number of hobby hunters currently holding a licence in Luxembourg (2’300).
«This petition aims to prompt a response to this form of hunting, which constitutes torture for the animals being hunted. Exhausting an animal to its limits and then killing it is torture and gives the animal no chance. This barbaric form of hunting should be abolished.»
Trophy hunting remains a problem
Environment Minister Joëlle Welfring had expressed her regret that hobby hunters preferentially kill male animals. «This could indicate that hunting in Luxembourg is still partly oriented towards trophies. However, effective population regulation is only possible when there is significant intervention in the female population,» she emphasised. Hobby hunting fails as population control.
