Campaign: End Recreational Hunting

Amendment of hunting laws in Rhineland-Palatinate and Brandenburg.

Editorial team Wild beim Wild · 14 January 2023

Large-format posters against recreational hunting

With large-format posters and advertisements in local daily newspapers, Wildtierschutz Deutschland is campaigning against recreational hunting starting in mid-January in Mainz and Potsdam.

In the state capitals of Rhineland-Palatinate and Brandenburg, authorities and parliamentarians will shortly be deciding on amendments to the state hunting laws.

In joint statements with the Bund gegen Missbrauch der Tiere, the Deutschen Tierschutzbund and the Deutsche Juristische Gesellschaft für Tierschutzrecht, the associations are calling on the ministries to align hunting law more closely with the public interest and in particular to take account of the enshrining of animal protection as a state objective in the Basic Law.

Wildlife under constant stress

Hunting legislation has for decades reflected neither societal attitudes nor legal developments in the field of animal protection. Wildlife is under constant stress. There is not a single period in the year during which hunting comes to a complete halt. Driven hunts are conducted well into the depths of winter, for a fee, with inexperienced shooters and unsuitable dogs.

In terms of content, the campaign addresses fox hunting and trapping, the unconscionable hunting of badgers, and the hunting of endangered species. Trap hunting and the hunting of predators, as well as hares and partridges within the context of recreational hunting, are neither ecologically nor ethically justifiable.

With regard to the nationwide hunting tallies of over 450’000 foxes and over 80’000 badgers, the authorities are unable to provide reliable evidence of any ecological, epidemiological or economic benefits. Recreational hunting fails as a means of population control.

More on the subject of recreational hunting: In the dossier The Role and Criticism of Recreational Hunters we shed light on the training, power and self-image of recreational hunters. What the research says about this is shown by Hunting fact-checked: the state of research.

The position of IG Wild beim Wild: IG Wild beim Wild rejects recreational hunting. Our model is the canton of Geneva, which has managed without recreational hunting since 1974: without hunting seasons, without hunting dogs, without driven hunts, without high seats, without the animal cruelty and crime that go hand in hand with hunting season elsewhere. What has worked there for over fifty years disproves every position paper by JagdSchweiz. An association that bases its policy on claims it refutes in its own documents is not a professional organisation, but a factory for misinformation.
