Zoos harm animals more than many people realize
Zoos inflict more harm on animals than many people are aware of. Animals in captivity often develop behavioral disorders and psychological problems.
Many of us grew up visiting zoos. Unfortunately, zoos are no longer as spectacular as we remember them. In many cases, the animals in zoos have a far lower quality of life than in the wild.
Why should zoos be banned?
«Zoos are prisons for animals that conceal their cruelty under the guise of animal welfare,» said Mimi Bekhechi of PETA to National Geographic. Typical polar bear enclosures are «one million times smaller» than in the wild.
According to the World Animal Foundation, zoos do not provide species-appropriate environments for animals. Many animals are neglected and may even die prematurely. Although some zoos are credited with having saved certain species from extinction, biodiversity continues to decline.
What alternatives exist?
