Wolf Massacre in Valais: Shooting of Several Packs
In Valais, four of the currently eleven wolf packs can now be shot after all. The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) has approved a supplementary application from the canton after initially rejecting a shooting request for the Hérens-Mandelon pack.
Upon receiving the FOEN's authorisation, State Councillor Frédéric Favre ordered the culling of this pack as well.
Initially, the FOEN had decided that the canton of Valais was only permitted to shoot one of the four planned wolf packs. Permission to hunt was at first granted exclusively for the Nanz pack.
Subsequently, State Councillor Frédéric Favre approached Environment Minister Albert Rösti. The two parties agreed that Valais could submit reconsideration requests for a massacre concerning these three packs without a shooting permit.
Shooting permit also for the Les Toules pack
Initially, the FOEN subsequently granted a shooting permit for the Les Toules and Augstbord packs. In both cases, the federal office concluded, following supplementary applications from Valais, that wolves had attacked livestock in protected situations. Finally, the authorities in Bern approved the culling of the Hérens-Mandelon pack.
The wolf population in Valais is estimated at 90 to 120 individuals. During the current hunting season, five wolves have so far been killed in Valais, two of them by game wardens and three by hobby hunters. The regulation permit is valid until 31 January 2025.
