The supporters of the popular initiative «Let the rock ptarmigan live» are celebrating the result achieved on 24 February 2021 in the Grand Council.
54 votes in favour of the hunting ban
By approving the individual report of the Committee for Environment and Energy, the parliament endorsed the ban on hobby hunting of the rock ptarmigan in Ticino with 54 votes in favour, 8 against and 17 abstentions.
This magnificent bird, a symbol of our mountains, is listed on the Red List of endangered species and is particularly threatened by global warming and the loss of suitable habitats south of the Alps.
With the definitive ban on hobby hunting of the rock ptarmigan in Ticino, we have given this magnificent creature an additional chance of survival. We hope that Ticino will pave the way for similar initiatives in other cantons.
