Thailand: Court convicts 5 hobby hunters
A court in Thailand sentenced five hobby hunters to five years in prison each. They had killed a female tiger and her cub in a national park.
5 men were sentenced on 6 March 2023 by a court in western Thailand to five years in prison each for killing a female tiger and her cub in a national park.
Tiger skins, bones, carcass parts
The tiger parts were seized by park rangers. The court rejected the men's claim that they had killed the tigers in retaliation for attacks on livestock.
Only 4’500 tigers left worldwide
According to the WWF, there are only around 4’500 wild tigers left in the world. The demand for tiger bones and skins is one of the main drivers of poaching.
Verdict as a warning
The five poachers must pay 750’000 baht plus 5% interest in compensation. This is a serious warning to all illegal poachers in Thailand's national parks, reports CNN. More on the topic of crime and hunting and species protection.
