Stressed plants cry audibly
Researchers have for the first time recorded clicking sounds from stressed plants. The sounds are species-specific and audible to animals.
Ultrasonic sounds under stress
Researchers at Tel Aviv University have for the first time recorded sounds from plants that no human can hear. “We found that plants typically emit sounds when they are under stress,” said Professor Lilach Hadany. The study was published in Cell.
Plants transmit information
Stressed plants emitted dozens of sounds per hour. “Apparently, an idyllic flower field can be quite a noisy place,” said Hadany. Bats, rodents and insects can presumably hear the sounds. More on the topic of wildlife and studies.
