Sri Lanka considers exporting 100’000 toque macaques to China
In Sri Lanka, toque macaques are raiding coconut plantations. The country is now considering handing over the primates to China in large numbers. But there is criticism, as the animals are considered endangered.
100’000 endangered toque macaques to China?
The government of the heavily indebted crisis state of Sri Lanka is considering exporting 100’000 specimens of an endangered monkey species to China. Animal welfare advocates fear that the monkeys could be used for research purposes or end up as food.
Monkeys on the Red List
The Ceylon toque macaques are listed on the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN. They are found in the wild only in Sri Lanka. More on the topic of species conservation and animal rights.
