Record bearded vulture offspring in Switzerland
25 bearded vulture pairs in Switzerland successfully raised young in 2023. For the first time, rearing also succeeded in Ticino. A record since reintroduction.
In 2023, bearded vultures in Switzerland produced more offspring than at any time since the reintroduction programme began around thirty years ago.
According to the Pro Bartgeier Foundation 25 bearded vulture pairs successfully raised a young bird.
For the first time, young birds were also successfully reared in the canton of Ticino, as the foundation announced.
In total, 163 bearded vultures have been released into the wild in Switzerland as part of the reintroduction programme. The first successful breeding by reintroduced bearded vultures took place in 2007 in the cantons of Graubünden and Valais. Since 2019, a pair has also been breeding in the Bernese Oberland.
The successful reintroduction of the bird of prey in Switzerland is also of great international significance, the foundation stated. In many regions of its former range across Eurasia and North Africa, the bearded vulture is severely endangered or extinct.
