Monkey fights in Thailand bring traffic to a standstill

According to “The Nation Thailand,” the conflicts between the groups were not about food. Rather, long-running disputes between the leaders are said to have come to a head.

Hundreds of monkeys brawl on a street in Thailand, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Although monkey fights are common in this area, one eyewitness said he had never seen so many monkeys fighting each other at once. He compared it to a gang fight in a movie.

Most people associate gang fights with films and TV series, but on the streets of Thailand they have become reality. However, the brawl is not between humans, but between rival monkey gangs! The fight was so epic that it even brought traffic to a standstill and caused a traffic jam. Now the extraordinary footage captured by a bystander is going viral.

In the videos circulating online, two large groups of monkeys can be seen attacking each other and terrorising commuters at an intersection. As the monkeys continued their battle, people on motorcycles and in cars were seen waiting, while some tried to avoid the commotion out of fear of getting caught up in the fight.

The wild incident took place near Prang Sam Yot, in front of the Phra Kan Shrine in Lopburi, a popular tourist destination home to thousands of monkeys. Due to restrictions keeping tourists out of the city and a lockdown that kept even most locals in their homes, the monkeys had been struggling to find food. It appears that hunger triggered the fight between the two groups.

«Monkey fights in Lopburi are common. This is nothing unusual. It is about the struggle for dominance, the fight for food, the fertilisation of females«, according to a spokesperson for the Department of National Parks.

He said it had been impossible to stop the monkeys once they turned on each other, and when people started honking their horns more loudly to drive them away, it only made things worse.«As a result of this incident, several monkeys were injured. The road was stained with blood. And only when the leader of the losing side gave up did they retreat«.

However, this is not the first time something like this has happened. In 2020, two monkey gangs in the same city were involved in a fight, and the video sparked a serious discussion about the treatment of animals during the pandemic. Many had argued that tourism has changed the behavior of these monkeys, as they now expect to be fed by humans.
