Lying Hunter as Department Head in St. Gallen
The former managing director of Wildtier Schweiz is today the head of the hunting department in the canton of St. Gallen. IG Wild beim Wild criticizes his working methods.
Problem Hunter in a Cantonal Position
The former managing director of the association Wildtier Schweiz has entrenched himself at the canton of St. Gallen.
He is now listed there as Head of Department for Hunting and Nonsense . The problem with hobby hunter Simon Meier is that he repeatedly and manipulatively attempts to achieve his goals through falsehoods and dangerous half-truths.
Unscientific Wolf Regulation
Simon Meier is currently targeting wolves. “The idea of regulation is not only to control the population, but to have the wolves learn a certain behaviour,” says Simon Meier.
Experts, however, hold a different view: “I prefer to see wolves alive rather than dead,” says David Gerke, managing director of the group Wolf Schweiz. According to Gerke, it is unlikely that the culling is effective and that wolves subsequently stop preying on sheep. Protecting herds in combination with herding dogs and electric fences is a more efficient and, above all, more animal-friendly method.
Easy prey remains easy prey. The more decimated a pack is, the more likely it is to fall back on easy prey. Dead wolves learn nothing more; deterred wolves do, especially with regard to the protection of livestock.
Hares: Geneva Model Shows Success
In the Tagblatt , Simon Meier speculates that the population of hares has also declined significantly due to too many predators such as foxes, cats, herons and storks. The actual cause of the poor situation facing hares is different. Unfavourable habitat conditions and hobby hunting are primarily responsible for the low hare populations found in many areas.
The highest density of brown hares was recorded in 2016 with 17.7/100 ha in the hunting-free Canton of Geneva . There, where professional game wardens take care of wildlife management. In the canton of Geneva, free of hobby hunters, foxes and the like are not massacred either.
