Llama killer loses hunting licence

A recreational hunter shot a llama instead of a deer in the Muotathal. He loses his hunting licence and must pay a fine.

Editorial team Wild beim Wild — 23 September 2021

A wildlife killer shot a llama instead of a deer, roe deer, or chamois during the open season hunt in the Muotathal.

The animals were grazing together with sheep at the entrance to Bisistal between Stahli and Suteren in the canton of Schwyz when the fatal shot was fired. It was unfortunately even the lead mare, writes the Luzerner Zeitung.

Cover up and settle "under the table"

After he was interviewed by the cantonal police, the public prosecutor's office was brought in. "They must now examine the facts and determine the type of punishment." An aggravating factor is certainly that the recreational hunter tried to cover up the misshot and wanted to settle the matter with the farmer "under the table".

For Manuel Wyss of the Schwyz hunting administration, it is clear that this incident must have consequences: "When a recreational hunter decides to take a shot, he must know what he is shooting at." And so it is clear to him: "This recreational hunter has most certainly finished hunting for a while», writes srf.ch.

Three misshots in September

4 September: A few hundred metres north of the Jurassian town of Porrentruy, a recreational hunter accidentally shoots a horse. He had intended to shoot a wild boar.
8 September: Just four days later, a recreational hunter in the Upper Engadine GR accidentally shoots a horse, mistaking it for a roe buck. The seriously injured Icelandic horse subsequently has to be put down.
21 September: In the Muotatal SZ, a recreational hunter shoots a llama that had been kept by a farmer as a herd protection animal. Since the recreational hunter did not report the incident, despite being legally required to do so, he must expect legal consequences.
