Keeping chickens properly

There are 70,000 private chicken-keeping operations in Switzerland. To keep chickens healthy, owners must understand their needs.

In Switzerland there are an estimated 70’000 private chicken-keeping operations, and the trend is rising. The Federal Food Safety Office and the STS publish recommendations at huehnerrichtighalten.ch.

Providing sufficient space

For three to six chickens, an enclosure should ideally measure 60 square metres. The pasture should be surrounded by a sturdy fence to prevent predators such as foxes from entering.

Keeping chickens healthy

Hygiene and cleanliness around the coop and run are important. Chickens must be observed daily. The decision to acquire them should be carefully considered: chickens can live up to ten years. More on the topic of animal rights and animal welfare.
