Late in the evening of 25 March, residents of the «Neue Welt» allotment garden site near Frankfurt (Oder) are startled by gunshots.

45 minutes of massacre against wild boar

According to a newspaper report, three adult females and 21 piglets were lured into a wire cage near Kliestower Strasse and shot one by one by the recreational hunters. Residents reported hearing gunshots as well as screams and squealing from the wild boar over a period of 45 minutes. PETA has filed a criminal complaint against persons unknown with the public prosecutor’s office in Frankfurt (Oder).

Killing wild boar in cage traps is animal cruelty. The hunting of wild boar is also entirely pointless. When it comes to culling on account of African swine fever, the sole aim is to protect the profits of farmers.

Peter Höffken, policy adviser at PETA

Wild boar killings only protect profits

In the 2019/2020 hunting year, the number of animals killed rose by around 50 percent compared to 2016/2017, reaching 882,231 animals nationwide. However, increased hunting is not an effective approach: the disease is transmitted primarily through contaminated food and slaughter waste — in other words, by humans.

The high hunting pressure is also counterproductive, as it leads to growth in the overall population. Researchers have been able to demonstrate that female wild boar in hunted populations reach sexual maturity earlier and that birth rates increase.
