Hunting

Harmful actions are shameful actions

Today's hunting system is a vicious cycle that hobby hunters and all those who profit from it take pleasure in.

Editorial team Wild beim Wild — 2 October 2021

Wild animals do not belong to hobby hunters (res nullius), but equally to the non-hunting majority of the population.

The ratio is 4 (hobby hunters) to 96 (non-hunters). That is why we should not be indifferent when a minority torments a common good in our neighbourhood. Hobby hunters go so far as to believe they do not need to justify their cruelty to animals.

Important cornerstones are frequently left out of the hunting system. There is neither adequate prevention to ensure that no living creatures need to be shot, nor, for example, birth control to stabilise wildlife populations. Scientific tools for this have long been available, such as immunocontraception. Recreational hunting does not mean fewer animals in the wild, but rather more births and chaos in the natural order.

What is the background to the term hunting instinct?

Quite simply, from a legal perspective it could be considered fraudulent misrepresentation. “Hunting instinct” conceals the term “killing instinct.” In Germany, for example, over 500,000 healthy foxes are killed per hunting season — which, according to scientific studies, is nonsense in its purest form. In Switzerland, the number exceeds 20,000 foxes.

The hunter loves nature the way the paedophile loves children

A mental disorder cannot be cured by giving it free rein. Historically speaking, recreational hunting for population management is not hunting at all, but rather terrorist zoocide.

Criticism of hunting is the unheard voice of the animals

Critics of hunting attempt to portray wild animals as more than mere objects that must be constantly and militantly eliminated. They identify grievances and offer guidance on how to pursue contemporary and ethical approaches.

The recreational hunting is today not only unsustainable. Hobby hunting needlessly torments countless animals — the hunting statistics prove this beyond any doubt. Recreational hunters do not regulate wildlife; they merely decimate it, and neither ethically nor sustainably.

Decimated wildlife populations produce more offspring than those in unhunted areas. Recreational hunters are therefore responsible for the damage, particularly for the many wildlife-related accidents. If there were more predators such as lynx and wolves, there would be a smaller ungulate population, which would accordingly result in fewer accidents, fatalities, and injuries.

Hobby hunting pretends to be something it is not

The umbrella organization of Swiss hobby hunters wrote on 29 August 2011: «JagdSchweiz knows that wildlife populations would, in principle — even in our cultivated landscape — regulate themselves naturally.»

Yet recreational hunters typically show little interest in important wildlife biology findings, ecology, animal welfare, or ethics. Practically everything that violates animal welfare standards is considered fair chase.

Ethically evolved nature lovers have wonderful experiences in nature without executing wildlife. There are countless admirable people who also use, nurture, and care for nature. None of them would ever think of demanding a sacrifice in the form of a living creature for doing so, as recreational hunters do.

No hobby hunter would do anything for species or nature conservation if they are not allowed to kill. This was clearly and predictably revealed by the referendum «Wildlife wardens instead of hunters» in the Canton of Zurich, as was entirely foreseeable.
