Avoid zebra and other exotic meats

According to scientists at the South African University of Stellenbosch, plains zebras could be a "valuable" source of protein for the country.

Zebra meat as a food source?

Researchers have presented data showing that zebra meat is lean. The recommendation to add zebras to the menu comes at a time when South Africa's new game meat strategy is being finalised.

Zebras are not commonly eaten in South Africa at present, although the animals are frequently hunted. Most are killed for their distinctive hides.

The term “exotic meat” refers to food derived from unusual and often endangered animal species. Captive breeding and the intensive, profit-driven keeping of wild animals in South Africa often undermines conservation efforts and has negative impacts on biodiversity.

Plains zebras are classified as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The population is steadily declining. More on the topic of species conservation.

Growing awareness of plant-based foods

A study shows growing interest in a meat-free diet. According to the study, 66 percent of South Africans are interested in trying plant-based meat alternatives.
