Animal Rescue with a Surprise
The Brugg Fire Department freed two tawny owls from a chimney in Schinznach-Bad. During the repair work, a second owl came to light.
On Sunday lunchtime, the Brugg Fire Department rescued two tawny owls from a chimney in an apartment building in Schinznach-Bad.
The two owls were released back into the wild following the rescue, as the Brugg Fire Department reported.
Rescue operation for a trapped tawny owl
The fire department was alerted at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday via the cantonal emergency call centre. A tawny owl had become stuck in a chimney and was unable to free itself. Markus Obrist and Manuel Keller made their way to Schinznach-Bad, where they were already expected.
As the aerial ladder truck could not be used due to insufficient load capacity, the only option was to dismantle the chimney. After that, things moved quickly. The tawny owl flew straight into the apartment and from there out through the open window towards the forest.
Second tawny owl as a surprise
When the firefighters attempted to push the insert chimney back into place, they heard noises again. A second, slightly larger tawny owl had also become trapped in the chimney. With determined effort, the emergency crew managed to free this owl as well and release it into the wild. Tawny owls are among the native wildlife species that are increasingly suffering from the loss of suitable habitats.
