Cows drive off wolves together
What it looks like when wolves attack large livestock was shown on 18 October 2021 by French-speaking Swiss television. A video shows a pack attacking a cattle herd. The footage comes from the foundation of biologist Jean-Marc Landry.
«I believe this has never been filmed like this before», said Landry, who is also known in the Romandy as «Monsieur Loup» (Wolf). When a calf is attacked, the adult animals react and move together towards the wolves to drive them off. The sequences were recorded last year in the Vaud Jura in the region of the Marchairuz Pass.
First pack in 150 years in the canton of Vaud
A wolf pack was confirmed there in 2019 — the first in 150 years in the canton of Vaud. At the end of August, the FOEN had approved the shooting of two young wolves from this pack, after several livestock herds in the region had been attacked by predators.
It was the first time the canton of Vaud received the green light to carry out such regulatory culls. According to the canton, eleven cattle and four goats were killed in the Vaud Jura this summer. So far, the young wolves have not been shot. The shooting permit is valid until 31 March.
