Walnuts against stress

According to a study walnuts help counteract the effects of stress on body and mind.

The research findings suggest that, for example, university students could benefit from incorporating walnuts into their daily diet particularly when preparing for exams.

The research findings add to a growing body of evidence that eating walnuts improves brain and gut health. Previous studies have shown that the omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, melatonin, polyphenols, folic acid and vitamin E contained in walnuts contribute to the benefits for the brain and gut.

Improvements in mental health

«Students are exposed to academic stress during their studies, which negatively affects their mental health,» said Herselman.

«We found that those who consumed approximately half a cup of walnuts daily showed improvements in self-reported indicators of mental health,» the researchers said. «Walnut consumers also showed better long-term metabolic biomarkers and an overall better quality of sleep.»

While students in the control group reported increased levels of depression and stress before exams, these issues did not arise in those who consumed walnuts.

«We have shown that eating walnuts during stressful times can improve the mental health and overall well-being of university students. In addition, walnuts are a healthy and delicious snack,» said Professor Bobrovskaya. The study was published in the journal Nutrients .
