Today, approximately three out of four cows no longer have horns.

The film «The Dear Cattle» shows the example of three dairy farmers who dared to make a change – «Let me be a farmer; I used to be a destroyer,» says Franz-Josef Kögel, a farmer in the Allgäu. A film by Bertram Verhaag.

Away from high-performance dairy farming

The portrayed dairy farmers from the Allgäu want to give their cows a more species-appropriate life with their horns intact, defying what they were originally taught. Instead of locking the cows in the barn all day and feeding them concentrated feed and medication, daily pasture walks and a diet of only grass and hay are now on the programme.

«The Dear Cattle» shows farmers who care about the welfare of their animals and their connection to nature, and that both humans and animals benefit from the change.

Horned Cow Initiative

In keeping with the film: On 25 November 2018, the «Horned Cow Initiative» comes to a vote before the Swiss people, which aims to encourage farmers to leave the horns on both their cows and their goats. More on Animal Rights.
