Ticino: 1,100 wild boars shot dead
880 hobby hunters took part in the first summer wild boar hunt in Ticino. 1,100 animals were killed. Population control through shooting is failing.
First summer wild boar hunting season
The summer hunt was introduced for the first time this year in Ticino, in order to curb the population of these animals.
In the first summer wild boar hunting season, which began on 2 June and ended on 31 July, a total of 880 hobby hunters took part across almost the entire canton.
In total, 1,100 animals were killed: 566 in the Lugano area, 234 in the Locarno area, 173 in the Mendrisiotto area, 100 in the Bellinzona area and 27 in the Rivera district.
Hobby hunting lets the species multiply
In accordance with federal regulations, stalking was carried out in June at dusk and dawn in the meadows, and in July at night from elevated positions in the forest.
High hunt begins soon
The new season, that of the high hunt, which also targets red deer, roe deer and chamois, begins soon. It is scheduled from 2 to 16 and 22 to 26 September.
