Taiwan promotes plant-based diet through climate legislation
Taiwan has passed a climate law that mandates the promotion of a low-carbon diet with reference to plant-based foods.
Taiwan recently passed a progressive climate law that mandates the nationwide promotion of a «low-carbon diet» with particular reference to plant-based foods.
To clarify the concept of a low-carbon diet, the draft legislation calls on Taiwan's residents to focus on locally produced foods. In addition, plant-based ingredients are to be preferred.

Awareness is growing of the enormous carbon emissions associated with meat production. The organisation «Meat-Free Monday» has gained the support of more than 100 political candidates.
Net-zero emissions by 2050
In addition to signing the climate law, the Taiwanese authorities have also formalised their plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Major carbon producers will be required to pay a fee to offset their emissions. The levy is expected to apply to around 287 companies, each producing more than 25’000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
