Shocking footage from Finnish fur farms

Footage shows obese “monster foxes”, injured animals and cannibalism on Finnish fur farms. Selective breeding causes suffering.

Cruel conditions despite certification

Animal welfare organisations have released shocking footage showing foxes from fur farms in Finland with weeping and swollen, infected eyes and ears, injured and bloody tails, and deformed feet.

The footage also shows obese “monster foxes” with enormous skin folds caused by selective breeding, and fox cubs cannibalising their dead siblings.

The footage exposes the suffering of animals for the fur fashion industry, even in a country like Finland, where the fur trade boasts that almost 100% of fox fur farms are certified under the SAGA Fur assurance system. The system promises “the highest standard of animal welfare”, but the documented cruel conditions tell a different story.

The revelations come at a time when more than 1.2 million EU citizens have already signed the petition “Fur Free Europe”.

“There is no such thing as responsibly produced fur”

Festering wounds, psychological breakdowns and cannibalism are the reality of fur farms — worlds apart from the glossy PR that the fur trade attempts to sell through its guarantee systems.

The Finnish animal welfare organisation Oikeutta eläimille filmed between June and November 2022 at six randomly selected fur farms in Ostrobothnia. Fur farming has been banned in 19 European countries. An increasing number of fashion designers are going fur-free: Canada Goose, Gucci, Burberry, Versace, Chanel, Prada and other well-known brands have become fur-free.
