New Light on the Sex Life of Giraffes
Since giraffes have no breeding season, do not come into heat like cats or dogs, emit no mating calls, and display no visual cues of sexual readiness, understanding their sexual behavior is no simple matter.
Unique Reproductive Behavior
A recent study in Animals has delivered new insights into the unique sex life of giraffes . Males test females for sexual receptivity through a behaviour known as “flehmen”.
“Given the extreme development of their head and neck, they cannot risk going all the way down to the ground,” said lead author Lynette Hart of UC Davis.
Species Conservation Through Knowledge
“The more the public knows about them, the more interest they will have in protecting them,” added first author Benjamin Hart. More on the topics of wildlife and species conservation.
