Russia: Parliament Permits Hunting with Bow and Arrow

The Russian parliament wants to enhance the country's image as a major hunting nation — and is therefore permitting the use of bow and arrow. In doing so, however, the deputies are also exposing hunters to unpredictable risks.

Russia is permitting hunting with bow and arrow.

The parliament in Moscow passed a corresponding law on Wednesday in its third reading. According to media reports, the Duma deputies expect this to have a "very positive" effect on Russia's image as a major hunting nation. However, only those holding an official hunting licence will be permitted to roam the forests with bow and arrow.

Until now, bow and arrow as well as the crossbow had been fundamentally prohibited as weapons. Critics see in the new law risks for people as well: wounded animals would have more opportunity to attack hobby hunters if the shot was not lethal. Athletes who shoot with bow and arrow fear that they will face stricter controls, for example at railway stations. Experts do not expect poaching to increase as a result: bow and arrow are not cheap.

In Germany, bow hunting is prohibited. However, there is the possibility for a hunting leaseholder to apply for an exemption from the supreme hunting authority. According to the ministry, this would be an unprecedented procedure in Germany.
