Pride: The Error Lies with the Hobby Hunter

Biogenetic predispositions and early childhood relationship experiences explain the killing behavior of recreational hunters.

Editorial Wild beim Wild — 17 August 2023

Popularity ratings of recreational hunters disastrous

Popularity ratings of hobby hunters are equally disastrous on social media.

From a biogenetic perspective, today's hunting behavior can be explained as an interplay of genetic predisposition, early childhood relationship experiences, and unhealthy upbringing influences. Those who practise hunting are predominantly men. Furthermore, violence damages the brain and meat consumption causes it to shrink, according to current research.

A cry for help to Wild beim Wild

«Help ensure that these green-coated fellows and their green gun-toting women are put out of business. Watch over your children, for children in particular can very quickly be taken in by these green jackets.»

Hunters' tall tales and brown-shirt ideology do not differ substantially. Both camps place value on a culture of violence in pursuit of their diffuse agendas. Both hold a distorted worldview, which they seek to realise with cult-like militancy.

Hunters' tall tales detector

What type of person hides behind the hobby hunter? Does the hobby hunter, with his particular psychological profile, even fit into today's society any longer? Is the “noble art of hunting” still compatible with modern animal and nature conservation principles?

Wildlife management with firearms does not belong in the hands of hobby hunters — an ever-growing number of people agree on this. Hunters' folklore is not science. What is needed is an uprising of the decent.

Hobby hunters bring recreational hunting stress, panic and chaos into the highly sensitive social fabric of wildlife. Their reproductive behavior is thereby manipulated, so that correspondingly more offspring are conceived and losses are quickly compensated. Recreational hunters regulate nothing permanently — they only destroy, decimate, manipulate, and stimulate.

Hobby hunting is counterproductive

To explain this with regard to wild boar: In a functioning wild boar sounder, the scent emissions of pheromones by the lead sow normally result in mating and offspring only once a year. If this animal is missing because it has been shot, the consequence is uncontrolled reproduction by all sexually mature females in the sounder.

The hunting of foxes is also not without responsibility for the annual economic damage in the cultivated landscape. Added to this is a direct connection to regional outbreaks of disease, for example among foxes.

In Yellowstone National Park, wolves were reintroduced in 1995, after the land had become barren and desolate due to an overpopulation of deer and roe deer. Something remarkable happened: the wolves not only killed game, but also coyotes — as a result, there were once again more rabbits and mice, which in turn attracted birds of prey. The wolves even influenced the course of rivers.

Misplaced pride

Pride: The Error Lies in the Hobby Hunter
Misplaced pride

According to Wild beim Wild, the only far-reaching solution can be the radical reform of hobby hunting, toward a professional wildlife management system with game wardens and birth control where needed.

Every hobby hunter should therefore endeavor to leave this disreputable company and lead an upright life.

Interest Group Wild beim Wild

The IG Wild beim Wild is a non-profit interest group committed to the sustainable and non-violent improvement of the human-animal relationship, with a specialization in the legal aspects of wildlife protection. One of our main concerns is to introduce a contemporary and serious wildlife management system in the cultivated landscape, modeled on the Canton of Geneva — without hobby hunters, but with principled game wardens who truly deserve the title and act according to a code of honor. The monopoly on the use of force belongs in the hands of the state. The IG supports scientific methods of immunocontraception for wild animals.
