Petition: «No hunting, fishing and animal trade fairs at the Umwelt Arena Spreitenbach»
The Umwelt Arena Spreitenbach sees itself as a place that promotes sustainable lifestyles, ecological responsibility and solutions for the future. A fair that promotes recreational hunting and trophy culture as an appealing leisure activity stands in open contradiction to these guiding values.
It is incompatible for an institution that stands for environmental education to present practices associated with considerable animal suffering. Events such as the Terra Expo or angling fairs also mean real suffering: exotic animals are locked in tiny plastic boxes, with no retreat, under stress, fear and pain. Many die early due to improper husbandry. Animal shelters and rescue centres are overflowing with abandoned exotic animals because many keepers are overwhelmed. At such markets, the animals' welfare is not the priority — profit is.
Reptile keeping is particularly problematic. Based on a survey on reptile husbandry and extrapolations, the Swiss Animal Protection organisation STS estimates that across Switzerland there are over 60,000 instances of cruel and therefore punishable reptile keeping. Reptile keeping is therefore not “a hobby like any other”, but an area with systemic abuses, where the legal minimum requirements are often not met.
We are convinced that the Umwelt Arena and the municipality of Spreitenbach have an important role model function in animal and nature conservation. Cancelling such events would be a clear sign of a responsible, contemporary and ethically grounded stance.
With your signature, you call on the Umwelt Arena and the municipality of Spreitenbach to give neither hunting fairs nor animal markets such as the Terra Expo a platform. Every voice counts.

Dear Sir or Madam
we, the undersigned, call on you to no longer permit events at the Umwelt Arena Spreitenbach that present recreational hunting, trophy cult and animal suffering as leisure entertainment. This includes both hunting fairs and animal markets such as the Terra Expo, where exotic animals are displayed in cramped plastic boxes and sold to unprepared buyers.
Rationale
Such events sell recreational hunting as “culture” or “tradition”, even though it is associated with considerable animal suffering. There are hardly any scientifically sound reasons for hunting carrion crows, badgers, foxes or brown hares; they are not killed out of necessity, but for pleasure.
Animal markets such as the Terra Expo trivialise the keeping of exotic animals. The Swiss Animal Protection organisation (STS) estimates that there are more than 60,000 cases of cruel reptile keeping in Switzerland. An institution that stands for environmental education should not provide a platform for such offerings.
Our demands
1. No hunting fairs to be held at the Umwelt Arena Spreitenbach.
2. No future rental of premises for hunting or animal markets that trivialise or glorify animal suffering.
3. A clear municipal signal that nature and animal welfare in Spreitenbach are not compatible with weapons, trophy cult or the trade in exotic animals.
