Court suspends killing order

A court in the northern Italian province of Trentino has suspended the order to kill a 17-year-old bear that had killed a man jogging in the forest. Andrea Papi, 26, was the first person to be killed by a bear attack in Italy in modern times.

Reintroduction since 1998

Until 1998, there were only four wild bears left in Trentino. Nine bears were brought from Slovenia to Trentino. Today there are around 100 bears in the region. “You cannot kill these animals, but we need to work on a project to live with them,” said Ornella Dorigatti of OIPA.
