Is this the world's oldest cat?

Editorial Wild beim Wild — 25 November 2022

Flossie breaks the record

Normally, cats live to between 12 and 18 years of age. Not so for one cat in England.

The world's oldest living cat is almost as old as her new owner. At 26 years and 329 days, Flossie holds the record, the Guinness Book of Records announced.

“I knew from the start that Flossie was a special cat, but I never thought I would be sharing my home with a world record holder,” said 27-year-old Vicki Green from the south-east London borough of Orpington. “She is deaf and her eyesight is fading, but that doesn’t seem to bother her.”

The oldest cat lived to an even greater age

In human years, Flossie is at least 120, said Naomi Rosling of the animal welfare organisation Cats Protection. The editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records, Craig Glenday, compared the cat to Jeanne Calment.

The French woman is considered the oldest person ever to have lived, at 122 years and 164 days. To claim the record as the oldest cat in history, however, Flossie still has some way to go: that record is held by Creme Puff – the US cat lived to 38 years and 3 days. Impressive examples of the vitality of our animal companions.
