IKEA launches the PLANT-HOTDOG
New IKEA hotdog comes with an entirely plant-based ingredient list - Germany is one of the first IKEA countries to introduce the new plant-based hotdog - The PLANT-HOTDOG has been served in the Swedish bistros of IKEA stores in Germany since 1 July 2023.
For many people, hotdogs have become an indispensable part of a visit to IKEA.
At the same time, more and more people today are making conscious decisions regarding their diet and in particular also regarding how food affects health and the environment.IKEA wants to support people in leading a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle and has therefore taken on the challenge of creating a plant-based hotdog. The result is the PLANT-HOTDOG, which promises to be equal to the original in terms of taste.
«Our vision at IKEA is to create a better everyday life for the many people. Through our food offering, we can contribute to this by providing delicious, healthier and more sustainable dishes,» says Helene von Reis, Food Manager at IKEA of Sweden.
The hotdog with a difference
How does one create a hotdog that appeals to meat lovers as well as vegetarians and vegans alike? How does one ensure that the plant-based alternative has the same satisfying bite and distinctive flavour that people know from the original meat-based product? IKEA has successfully risen to this challenge. And not for the first time, as IKEA already succeeded in developing a more sustainable alternative that closely resembles the original meat-based product with the PLANTBULLAR, the plant-based version of the popular KÖTTBULLAR.
«We have invested a lot of time in the development process of the PLANT-HOTDOG to offer our customers the best possible experience. With its great taste, texture and snap when you bite into it, the plant-based hotdog is a perfect alternative to the traditional hotdog», says Helene von Reis. The latest and innovative addition to the family of plant-based IKEA foods contains rice protein, onions, apple, salt, pepper and smoke flavourings. They give the PLANT-HOTDOG a balanced flavour that comes particularly close to that of the original meat-based version.
IKEA Germany is a pioneer in plant-based nutrition
Since October 2022, the most popular products from the plant-based food range have been offered at all Ingka Group locations at the same or even lower price than the comparable animal protein-based alternative. And IKEA Germany goes even further: since October 2022, the plant-based alternative at all locations in the country is always the more affordable option.
In addition, IKEA Germany has been participating every year in Veganuary since 2020, in order to inspire even more people to adopt a healthier and more sustainable diet and at the same time to show how easy and delicious eating plant-based can be.
Plant-based offering at IKEA grows
IKEA has resolved that by 2025, half of the meals served in IKEA restaurants will be plant-based. Eighty percent of the packaged foods in the Swedish shops will consist of plant-based alternatives.
«In the future, we want to offer even more plant-based and therefore healthier alternatives with a lower climate footprint. Plant-based foods often have a significantly lower impact on the climate than animal products», says Helene von Reis.
