Hunted Buffalo Kills Trophy Hunter in South Africa
In South Africa, a hunted buffalo has killed a trophy hunter. The incident highlights the dangers of trophy hunting.
Oxford Safaris is an exclusive hunting lodge situated directly on the border with Botswana, approximately 20 km from the small town of Steenbokpan and 75 km from Lepalale.
Accommodation with full board as well as self-catering options for groups of up to 16 people are offered, according to Tino Snyman, the owner of the farm.
Police in Lephalale are now investigating the death of a wildlife killer identified as Benjamin De Bruyn, after he was allegedly gored by an enraged buffalo.
De Bruyn, Snyman and a photographer went hunting on 30 June 2022. De Bruyn specifically wanted to shoot a buffalo bull (asking price: R 100’000 = approximately 6’000.– Swiss francs).
De Bruyn wounded the animal and the buffalo charged at De Bruyn and then at Snyman. The latter attempted to save De Bruyn, but he died on the spot. Snyman was taken to hospital with a broken arm, wounds and bruises. The photographer was uninjured. The buffalo was killed. Out of consideration for the family, Snyman declined to share any further information.
The Limpopo police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi, said the incident took place on Oxford Farm in Steenbokpan. This occurred just days after a notorious trophy hunter was shot dead nearby.
«Allegedly, the victim was out with the farm owner and a photographer when the buffalo attacked him after he had fired shots at it. Unfortunately, he was dead on the spot«, said Seabi.
«Although the farm owner attempted to save him by firing several shots at the buffalo, the buffalo chased him and attacked him as well. He escaped by climbing a tree, and the photographer also managed to keep a safe distance..»
Seabi said that emergency services, including the police, were called to the scene and the 50-year-old hobby hunter was pronounced dead.
