Hobby hunter shoots wolfdog

A shot shattered the romantic evening atmosphere between Remderoda and Münchenroda on June 2nd.

Hobby hunter Thomas Hornung of the Jena Hunters' Association had shot the dog Miro on that June 2nd. «We hobby hunters not only have the right to defend our game, we have a duty to do so», says Hornung, who has been killing wildlife for some 40 years.

But Thomas Hornung has already shot a dog for the second time.

Miro was a young Czechoslovakian Wolfdog. «He was well trained. My daughter wanted to have Miro trained as a therapy dog», says Doreen Jaenichen.

«Miro died in my arms. You can’t even imagine it — it was terrible.» Her daughter Leonor had only received the dog as a puppy the previous year.

Hornung cites as his reason for the necessary shooting the danger that Miro could have mated with a wolf that had been spotted in Jena. Furthermore, no written authorisation for the shooting had been obtained.

The correct interpretation of animal welfare, forestry and hunting law is now a matter for the courts. Doreen Jaenichen has filed a criminal complaint.
