Freiberg Kärpf Wildlife Reserve
The Freiberg Kärpf wildlife sanctuary is celebrating an anniversary this year. The area, which covers 100 square kilometres, is to be honoured with exciting events and activities.
Oldest Wildlife Sanctuary in Europe
In the heart of the canton of Glarus lies the oldest wildlife sanctuary in Europe: the Freiberg Kärpf. As far back as 475 years ago, hobby hunting was banned here. At around 100 square kilometres, it is one of the largest hunting reserves in Switzerland.
Habitat for wildlife
Today, ibex, chamois, deer and roe deer live here, as well as marmots, eagles and black grouse. The wildlife sanctuary offers a largely undisturbed habitat of particular significance for biodiversity. More on the topic of the Geneva model and environment and nature conservation.
